Typography

Freight, our primary advancement branding typeface, features Sans, Text, and Micro fonts. The Freight family was selected because it is warm, open, legible at all sizes, and flexible.

Please note that the Inter and Source Serif fonts are used in campus communications only. Use Freight and/or Open Sans in all advancement communications.

Freight

Freight has three styles, each with six weights and an extensive character set, and it supports over 90 languages. The Freight family is free through the Adobe Creative Cloud.

Open Sans

Open Sans is recommended as the free alternative to Freight Sans for web and mobile. It is a highly legible sans serif typeface with a friendly appearance. Open Sans is free through Font Squirrel.

Alternative fonts

If Freight and Open Sans aren’t available, use Arial or Times, which are readily available on most computer systems and will not break the design. UDAR uses Arial in all emails and PowerPoint presentations.

UC Berkeley OS

UC Berkeley OS is a redrawn digital version of the University of California’s original typeface, University Old Style. A classic and highly legible serif font, it is used in advancement materials requiring an elegant and ceremonial tone, such as citations, certificates, and formal invitations. Please note that UDAR does not offer this font to anyone to use, and it is not the same font as Berkeley Oldstyle.
